Encaustic is an ancient art medium that has been popular with contemporary artists since its use by Jasper Johns in the 1960s. While the look and feel of encaustic art is seductive, it can be intimidating to attempt on your own. I offer a variety of workshops in my private studio in Austin to help artists and non-artists experience encaustics. Groups are limited in size and advance registration is required.

Friday October 1 / 6:30pm - 8:00pm / $50
Intro to Encaustics

For those of you “just curious” about encaustics, join me for this evening demonstration. We will discuss the history and current use of encaustics, introduce basic techniques, and explore the wide variety of materials now available for encaustics. This is primarily a demonstration event but all participants will have a chance to try using the materials.

Saturday October 2 / 10:00am - 2:00pm / $120
Encaustics 101

This is a great beginner’s primer, covering the basics of encaustics from materials, fusing, layering, scraping, texture and safety. No prior experience is necessary. All supplies will be provided and you will leave class with 1-2 finished projects.

Saturday November 6 / 10:00am - 2:00pm / $120
Intermediate Encaustics: Transfers & Imagery

If you have a beginner’s understanding of encaustics then you are ready to incorporate techniques transferring images from photos, drawings, and other media. Also learn how to incorporate mark making with various drawing tools. I will do several demonstrations of the techniques before you try them yourself. All supplies will be provided and you will leave class with 2-3 finished projects.

Saturday December 4 / 10:00am - 2:00pm / $120
Intermediate Encaustics: Texture and Pigment Sticks

With a basic understanding of encaustics you can build wonderful textures by embedding objects and using brush techniques and specialty tools. I will do several demonstrations of the techniques before you try them yourself. All supplies will be provided and you will leave class with 2-3 finished projects.
