CLARA
Rockmore
(1911-1998)
Theremin virtuoso
Clara Rockmore: A Lithuanian classical violin prodigy but also the most renowned theremin player in the world. After moving to the United States, Clara met fellow immigrant Léon Theremin who introduced her to his gesture-controlled instrument. Though electronic music was uncommon in formal music settings in the 1930s, Rockmore performed as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony. Rockmore described her style of theremin play: “You must not only hit a note, but you must hit the center of it. You cannot register any of your internal emotion at all. You cannot shake your head, for instance, or sway back and forth on your feet. That would change your tone.”
